God Shiva’s Jyotirling shrines in India

There are twelve Jyotirling in India, which are spiritual representation of God Shiva. Jyotirling is also known as Jyotirlinga or Jyotirlingam. Jyoti means sparkle or light and ling means the sign or image of God Shiva. Jyorilingam sites are very spiritual and people in millions in number comes visits these places on Mahashivratri.

Twelve Jyotirling of God Shiva

Starting from Northern India to South India, there are 12 Jyotirlings in 8 states of India. The maximum number of Jyotiings (four) are in Maharastra. Madhya Pradesh has two Jyotirlings. Other states like Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu each have one Jyotiling.

Jyotirlingam in Maharashtra

Maharashtra has four jyotirlinga shrines, which is highest among all other states. They are:

  1. Trimbakeshwar Shiv Temple                                                                                                                                               It is located nearby Godavari River, Nasik.Trimbakeshwar Jyotirling
  2. Nageshwar Temple in Dwarka                                                                                                                                    (Naganath + Jageshwar = Nageshwar)Nageshwar Jyotirling
  3. Grishneshwar Shiv Temple                                                                                                                                           This is one of the twelve Jyotirlings mentioned in God Shiva’s Purana. This is a very spiritual place and is very famous. This Jyortiling is also known as “Ghushmeshwar Jyotirling.” It is located near Ellora, Aurangabad in Maharastra.
  4. Bheemashankar Temple                                                                                                                                                Bheemashankar Jyotirling This is a picture of Bheemashankar jyotirling in Winter season. A huge fog around the surroundings of this temple. This is a very religious place and people around the country comes to this place in all seasons.

Two Jyotirlings, which makes Madhya pradesh even more spiritual are:

  1. Mahakaleshwar Temple
  2. Omkareshwar Temple

Kedarnath Temple in Uttarakhand

Kedarnath Jyotirling is very famous temple situated in Uttarakhand state of India. It is one of the Jyotirlings of God Shiva. This temple remains open during summer. The way to this temple is very critical as this temple is located at distant height. This temple is one of the important visiting site for Chaar Dham Yatra. Vishwanath Temple in Uttar Pradesh

This temple is in the center of Varanasi constituency. Pilgrims comes to this place with sorrow and goes out with joy. That is the power of God Shiva. Pilgrims visits this place along-with Bhairo mandir. Varanasi city many famous temple like Bada (Big in English) Hanuman mandir and Kaali Mandir. This city is famous for its various Ghaats along river Ganga. One of the beautiful, people and archaeological site near this city is Sarnath. Here, the park and museum of Gautam Buddha is must viewing site.

Malikarjuna Swami Temple in Andhra Pradesh

This Jyotirlinga is known for its other name Srisaila because it is located in Srisailam in Kurnoor district of Andhra Pradesh. This temple is Jyotirlingam and Shakti Peeth both. It is sculpturally rich. It is most famous temple in state of Andhra Pradesh.

Rameshwar Temple in Rameshwaram (Tamil Nadu)

It is located in Rameshwaram island in Ramanathpuram district, Tamil Nadu. This temple is also known as Ramnath Swami Temple. It is one of twelve Jyotirlings of God Shiva. This temple has been made with Dravidian architecture.

Vaidyanath Temple in Jhakhand

It is located in Deoghar. It has a temple of Guru Baidyanath. There are 21 other temples which are open along-with Vaidyanath Jyotirling. This is a temple where King Ravana did worship God Shiva and got mighty powers.
